Edward Craig: Learning to love Graeme Smith

January 6th, 2010 by Edward Craig in South Africa

I used to loathe Graeme Smith.

He embodied everything that was wrong with South African cricket – he looked and acted like a school bully; he used negative tactics; he played ugly strokes, heaving and humphing leg-side boundaries; he was over-rated.

Yes, he scored two consecutive double-hundreds against England and, immense as those innings were, England bowled horrendously. Endless half-volleys on leg-stump, dispatched with a bottom-handed thump – just dreadful cricket.

Inevitably, England worked him out. My favourite bored moment at work became calculating his batting average against England without those two innings (a fatuous exercise, I know, but designed to make me feel better). It was woeful – in the low 20s.

Then something changed.

In the 2008 series, I found myself liking Smith: he’d become the player everyone thought he was back in 2003 – a serious, world-class performer. He’s tightened his technique (if not the aesthetics of it) and, most importantly, he scores vital runs. Hundreds at Lord’s, Edgbaston and now Cape Town were all made under immense pressure, with great aggression, superb tactics and skill. They have each had a massive impact in the series.

So, my new South African figure of loathing is JP Duminy – for the same reason: he is over-rated. At least this series he’s beginning to look exposed – his soft, declaration 36 today makes up for nothing, especially when you see how hurried he was playing pull shots off Anderson and Onions.

Maybe he’ll come good like Smith but he has a long way to go at international level. I am not alone in thinking this – England do not fear him either.

I’ve never met a nice South African, perhaps?
To be fair, they are hard to love with their caustic arrogance and nasty humour. Also, it’s just traditional to dislike white Saffers even though they’re pretty right on these days for the most part.

  2.   Vim says:

Why is it that English media and fans see arrogance everywhere except at home?

He has a very difficult job and got it when he was barely out of nappies. I have always admired him for that as well as his sheer bloody-mindedness.

  3.   Andy C says:

Why is it that people like Vim see arrogance in anything and everything written on this site?

  4.   The Village Cricketer says:

The Village Cricketer has just interviewed him*

  5.   Nick says:

This is journalism at it’s worst and it makes me sad.

How can you say that Duminy is arrogant? He has barely said two words to the media.

He had a good tour of Australia, and the MEDIA (ie. your peers) began rating him. Duminy has never spoken a word to big himself up, or disrespect anyone else.

If you think that your colleagues have overrated his abilities fine, but don’t start spewing false accusations of arrogance against the poor kid and saying you hate him.

Shame on you, I used to think it took some sort of journalistic ability or talent to make deputy editor, I guess not.

  6.   Taylor Chris says:

I don’t think Ed said he was arrogant. He just said he was over-rated.

  7.   Gumbo says:

    Good point Nick.
