Edward Craig: What we learned this month
March 18th, 2010 by Edward Craig in Test cricket
The best thing about working on a monthly magazine is that end-of-term feeling when you finish an issue. There’s a bit of office cricket, the IPL commentary gets turned up (not sure this is a good thing), the assistant editor wanders in around lunchtime, checks a few emails, then goes to lunch. And now in London the sun is shining, it’s nearly warm, and everything seems good.
So, as we have time to reflect, here’s what we learned/discovered/worked out while putting together the latest issue (due out week on Friday):
- Cricket, cricket everywhere – and every drop a drink: live cricket returned to free-to-air television and we all rejoiced. Then there were Tests and ODIs going on as well. And the county season is just round the corner. Winter is nearly over.
- If something massive happens in the IPL, cricket dominates Twitter trending in the US – which must befuddle plenty Americans
- Peter Willey, one of England’s allrounders through the 1970s and 80s (and now tough-nut umpire) only took seven Test wickets
- Sachin Tendulkar’s quite a good player
- People love designing bat stickers
- Abdul Qadir (pictured above) had two googlies: “One was the ordinary one which everyone bowls. But one was a difficult one given to me by God.”
- If you interview Graham Onions, he’ll either get dropped or injured for his next Test, it has happened to us twice
- A Leicestershire bowler sledged Marcus Trescothick about his illness
- Put KP on the cover and some vocal readers really won’t like it
- Only eight players with surnames beginning with ‘I’ have played Test cricket for England. Ronnie Irani is one of them. (Johns Ikin and Iddon are two, can you name the remaining five?)
- Hashim Amla uses the word ‘holistically’
- Afghanistan’s offspinner Karim Sadiq does a forward roll whenever he takes a wicket
- Alan Tyers is a GIGOLO’s friend
