The Wisden Cricketer has a new book out this week: an anthology of our ‘My Favourite Cricketer’ features, published by A&C Black. Here is my foreword to the book…

Hero worship takes many forms. Some love larger than life, as Bonnie Tyler sang, others prefer “honest and modest”, as Peter Roebuck says of Harold Larwood. Some are wowed by raw talent or seduced by beauty and flair. There are the imitators and the obsessives, the autograph hunters and the wannabes, finding heroism or idolatry in the underdog or the lame duck.

John Stern: Larwood misses the stumps

If the cricket book world could be said to have an awards season, it has just closed with the announcement on Monday of the MCC/Cricket Society Book of the Year.

In March a panel representing the Cricket Writers’ Club judged the cricket book of the year as part of the British Sports Book of the Year awards.

John Stern: Atherton wins again

After an Ashes year perhaps it shouldn’t have been a great surprise but cricket and cricket writing won big last night at the British Sports Journalism Awards. Of the 25 awards on offer, nine were won by cricket writers, broadcasters and photographers.

The big winner was Mike Atherton, who was named Columnist of the Year and also the ultimate accolade of Sports Writer of the Year. He was also highly commended in the Specialist Correspondent category which he won last year.

Daniel Brigham: Geoff Miller meets Ricky Gervais

Have you seen The Invention of Lying? It’s a Ricky Gervais film about a society where people can’t lie to each other: “What are you doing?” / “I was gonna rob your house.” / “I don’t like that idea. Not a fan of that at all”. It’s not really very good, but it seems that England’s chief selector Geoff Miller has given it a good watch and picked up some tips.

On announcing England’s provisional 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 yesterday, Miller was asked why Alastair Cook had been omitted. After all, he’s the current England captain and had a good tournament with Essex last season.
