John Stern: Atherton wins again

March 9th, 2010 by John Stern in Miscellaneous, Test cricket, The media

ath

After an Ashes year perhaps it shouldn’t have been a great surprise but cricket and cricket writing won big last night at the British Sports Journalism Awards. Of the 25 awards on offer, nine were won by cricket writers, broadcasters and photographers.

The big winner was Mike Atherton, who was named Columnist of the Year and also the ultimate accolade of Sports Writer of the Year. He was also highly commended in the Specialist Correspondent category which he won last year.

Daniel Brigham: Geoff Miller meets Ricky Gervais

March 2nd, 2010 by Daniel Brigham in England, International, Miscellaneous, Twenty20

Geoff Miller

Have you seen The Invention of Lying? It’s a Ricky Gervais film about a society where people can’t lie to each other: “What are you doing?” / “I was gonna rob your house.” / “I don’t like that idea. Not a fan of that at all”. It’s not really very good, but it seems that England’s chief selector Geoff Miller has given it a good watch and picked up some tips.

On announcing England’s provisional 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 yesterday, Miller was asked why Alastair Cook had been omitted. After all, he’s the current England captain and had a good tournament with Essex last season.

“I think if you think so much, you simply cannot bat,” says Virender Sehwag. “You never know when you get out. Try to score as much possible before that.”

So embrace risk-taking then?

“In my case, it would become risky if I try to become defensive, since my technique is not that good.”

Alan Tyers: 200* Amazing Facts About Sachin Tendulkar

February 25th, 2010 by Alan Tyers in Miscellaneous

tendulkar

EXPERIENCE! Sachin has now played over 12,000 games of cricket, putting him third in the all-time list behind WG Grace and a Mr Rachel Heyhoe-Flint of Wolverhampton, who has played TWO games of cricket every day since 1927, but only because his wife made him.

POWER! Despite being only four feet tall, Sachin can bench press 460 pounds. If Sachin was an ant, this would be the equivalent of AntSachin lifting a Cornish PASTY.

Win: A bat designed by you

February 18th, 2010 by Daniel Brigham in Miscellaneous

Warning: This post contains images of very bad bat designs by TWC staff

Ever fancied designing your own bat? Of course you have – what cricket nut hasn’t? So we’ve teamed up with Hawk bats and RH Technical Industries to allow you to just do that. We’ve provided a PDF that allows you to design every inch of your own bat, and the best one will win a bat with that very design!

To enter, just go to our homepage and click on the ‘design your own bat’ box and that’ll take you through to a PDF that you can download. To get you started, deputy editor Edward Craig has bullied the TWC team into producing their own designs, all of which would give Freud a field day …

“It took me a while to appreciate the culture, the people and to enjoy India. The first few tours, when you are losing, getting smashed all over the park and getting none for a hundred, it’s not much fun. But the last couple of tours we managed to beat India over there, I really started to enjoy the people and their passion.” Shane Warne

Daniel Brigham: Wants to look at your memorabilia

February 10th, 2010 by Daniel Brigham in Miscellaneous

No one does nerdery quite like cricket nerds. Which is why I’m banking on all of you to help me out.

I’m putting together a feature on people who collect cricket memorabilia and would love to hear from anyone with an interesting horde. It can be anything from owning every copy of England’s 1999 World Cup song (you remember, the one that came out after England had been knocked out of the competition) to scorecards from Surrey’s seven Championships in a row in the 1950s.

The world of cricket was abuzz with frenzied speculation last night as it emerged that a top county player has taken out a so-called “super injunction” to prevent a publication from printing lurid details about his private life.

Player X is described in legal papers seen by TWC Online as “a seamer on the verge of breaking into the outskirts of the fringes of the England set-up, given a bit of luck with injuries”.
