Alan Tyers: ICC Awards – The Speeches You May Have Missed

October 5th, 2009 by Alan Tyers in Alan Tyers, One-day cricket

Mitchell Johnson

Aw, look, I’d just like to say to Gerald Majola: you reckoned that only cricketers who performed in The Ashes were considered for these awards – I am living proof that this just isn’t true. Erm, I’d like to thank my mother. Hang on, no I wouldn’t. Er, yeah, I’d like to thank my captain, Ricky Ponting, for drawing all the abuse from the English crowds even when I went a bit Harmison. Thanks Ricky, and sorry again. And if you’ll excuse me, I must go and practice my Blue Steel stare in the mirror.

Peter Siddle

I was surprised and humbled to receive this award and my first reaction was to become very aggressive. I think I’ve brought a lot of qualities to this team including aggression, hostility, awesome competitiveness, swearing, a bit more aggression and some face paint, and this award is some welcome recognition for all the hard work of fetching the ball from the fine leg boundary when Mitch was bowling against the English.

Gautam Gambhir

Speech cancelled due to lack of interest.

MS Dhoni

To be named in the ODI side alongside Andrew Flintoff, Kevin Pietersen and even some able-bodied cricketers is of course a huge honour, as it is to be leading the ICC Test side with Sachin Tendulkar in it. Sachin is a massive inspiration to me: even at the grand old age of 36, he still has an enormous appetite for promotional work and endorsements. If I could make even a quarter of the rupees he has made in my own career, I would be an incredibly happy man.

Claire Taylor

This award only serves to reinforce my belief that I was correct to turn down the captaincy of the England men’s ODI side, and it’s an honour, not just for me personally, but for the whole England Women set-up. Sure, there’s been a few sneers about whether we should even be playing the game, but I think our performances this year have shown that just because a person is English, that doesn’t mean they can’t win cricket matches.
